Attention Fiction Writers: we're pleased to announce that ARDOR's inaugural short story contest will open for submissions on January 1st! Detailed submission guidelines and contest rules will be available on our website at that time. For now, we're pleased to give you a preliminary glimpse of the contest and introduce our guest judge so that you can use these next few weeks to begin polishing up your short fiction and preparing it for submission.
We will accept submissions of short stories and stand-alone novel excerpts up to 8,500 words for the first three months of the year (January 1st - March 31st). The short story selected as the winner of the contest will be published as the featured prose selection in the September issue of the magazine and the winner will be awarded a cash prize of $500. All contest submissions will be considered for publication in ARDOR and, if accepted, writers will be paid standard contributor rates.

Guest Judge: Chris Offutt
We're thrilled that veteran story writer Chris Offutt will serve as guest judge for our inaugural short story contest. Chris has published three collections of short stories (Kentucky Straight in 1992, Out of the Woods in 1999 and Luck in 2011), two memoirs (The Same River Twice in 1993 and No Heroes in 2002), a novel (The Good Brother, 1997) in addition to recent success writing for the screen. Chris' work has been anthologized in Best American Short Stories, he has been awarded a Gugenheim Foundation Fellowship for Fiction (1996), a Whiting Writers' Award (1996), a Lennan Fellowship for Fiction (2003) and was a Writers Guild of America Nominee for best writing for the HBO series True Blood (2008). He currently serves as an Assistant Professor of English & Screenwriting at the University of Mississippi.
The 2013 ARDOR Short Story Contest will have a reading fee of $15 per entry and each submission will be read blind (the writer's identity will remain hidden until a winner is selected). In the interest of fairness current/former students and family members of Mr. Offutt will be ineligible to enter the contest. Simultaneous submissions will be accepted and writers are welcome to enter as many stories as they like, though a separate reading fee must accompany each submission and this fee is non-refundable if your story is accepted elsewhere. If the number of contest entries allows, ARDOR may increase prize money to the winner and/or award prize money to finalists.
