ARDOR's Fall Flash Fiction Contest

The 2013 Fall Flash Fiction Contest is NOW CLOSED to submissions of short fiction and prose-poetry up to 1,000 words in length (but we're open to general submissions).  The story selected as the winner of this year's flash fiction contest will receive a prize of $200 and will be published in Issue Four (January 2014) of ARDOR Literary Magazine. The story selected as the first runner-up will receive a prize of $50 and will also be published in Issue Four.  All entries will be considered for publication in ARDOR at the standard publication rate of $20. 

Joe Hessert, Founding Editor of ARDOR, served as contest judge and the winner and finalists were announced during the first week of December, 2013.
  • Simultaneous submissions will be considered but writers should withdraw their entry immediately upon its acceptance elsewhere.  If you submit multiple pieces and wish to withdraw one, please email us to let us know which piece is no longer available.  The entry fee is non-refundable.
  • You are welcome to submit as many times as you’d like – multiple submissions are encouraged!
  • Rather than charging a single contest entry-fee for “up to” three submissions we’re offering two submission options. Those who wish to submit only one piece of short fiction may submit in the single-entry category for $5.  Those who wish to submit up to three pieces may submit in the multiple-entry category for $10.
  • All entries will be offered a blind reading – manuscripts should therefore be free of the writer’s name and other identifying information.  The Submittable “Cover Letter” field will be obscured for all contest entries until the winner has been selected.
  • Family members and former students of the contest judge are ineligible.
  • Stand-alone excerpts from longer works of fiction will be considered providing they are previously unpublished.
  • Entries are accepted through Submittable, our online submission management system, beginning on September 1st. Entries are also welcome by mail. We regret that we cannot accept entries sent via email.
  • Mailed entries must be accompanied by a check for $5 (for a single entry) or $10 (for up to three entries).  If submitting more than three pieces, you’re welcome to pay the lowest possible amount based on these fees ($15 for 4 pieces, $20 for 6 pieces, etc.).  Checks should be made payable to ARDOR Literary Magazine and your cover letter should include complete contact information (an email address, phone number and mailing address). Your manuscript should be free of identifying information and the title of your entry should be clearly indicated on your submission and in your cover letter.
  • There is no need to include a SASE with your postal submission.  If you include your email address on your cover letter we’ll email you with an acceptance or rejection at the conclusion of the contest.
  • If you would like confirmation of receipt of your manuscript please include a self-addressed, stamped postcard. An announcement of the winner and finalists will be made on our blog in December and we will also share this news via Twitter and Facebook.
  • Online submissions must be sent by 11:59pm EST on October 31st. Mailed submissions must be postmarked on or before October 31st.
