FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
If you have a question about ARDOR Literary Magazine we may have already answered it! Please take a moment to browse this page, and if your question remains don't hesitate to email us at [email protected]. |
HOW DO I SUBMIT TO ARDOR LITERARY MAGAZINE?
Submitting is easy with Submittable - our online submission manager. Click HERE to submit or click the SUBMIT link at the top of the page for more information on what we are looking for, submission guidelines, and detailed instructions to guide you through the process.
DO YOU ACCEPT SUBMISSIONS FROM WRITERS OUTSIDE OF NORTH AMERICA?
Yes! We accept and publish art and writing (in English) from around the world.
DO YOU ACCEPT SUBMISSIONS BY MAIL OR EMAIL?
At this time we only accept submissions online through our submission manager, Submittable. All submissions received via email or snail mail will be deleted or recycled unread. One exception to this rule is that we do accept hard-copy submissions by mail for our writing contests.
WHAT IS YOUR PUBLISHING SCHEDULE?
ARDOR is published three times each year. New Issues are published in January, May and September. Exact dates of publication will be announced the last week of December, April and August. This announcement will appear on the NEWS page of this website and in our Twitter feed. Once published, each issue will be displayed in a gallery located in the ISSUES tab and a link to the current issue will be placed on the HOME page.
DO YOU PAY WRITERS IF THEIR WORK IS ACCEPTED?
Yes, although we wish we could pay more we just increased our compensation to contributors. Beginning in Issue Three (September, 2013) we offer $50 for prose over 1000 words, $20 for prose 1000 words or shorter and $15 per poem (minimum $20 paid per poet). ARDOR acquires First North American Serial Rights and First Electronic Rights. Payment will be issued by mail via check or via PayPal upon publication. More details can be found at the bottom of the SUBMIT page.
HOW LONG CAN I EXPECT TO WAIT AFTER SUBMITTING BEFORE I HEAR FROM YOU?
Typically it takes us less than a month to respond to work and occasionally we respond within days. If you submit near a submission deadline or as we prepare a new issue for release you can expect our response to take longer than usual. If you haven't heard from us within two months of submitting your work please query. We know it's hard to wait and we work diligently to strike a balance between offering two full, careful readings of each submission and a respectful, rapid response time.
DO YOU ACCEPT SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS AND/OR MULTIPLE SUBMISSIONS?
We do accept simultaneous submissions, but we ask that you label them as such and withdraw your work immediately via Submittable if your work is accepted elsewhere. If you need to withdraw one piece from a submission of multiple short-shorts or poems please email us with "URGENT-WITHDRAWAL [LASTNAME]" in the subject so we'll remove that piece from consideration and keep the balance of your work in its place in our queue.
We do accept multiple submissions but recommend that you wait at least one week before submitting additional work to ARDOR.
DO YOU PUBLISH MULTIPLE PIECES BY ONE WRITER IN THE SAME ISSUE?
We typically do not. The exceptions would be artwork, poems or (in the rare instance) connected short-shorts. We value each and every one of our contributors, but it's important to us to feature the work of a range of writers in each issue of ARDOR.
WHY DO YOU CHARGE A SUBMISSION FEE?
We feel strongly that writers should be paid something for their work upon publication ... even if it isn't much. The $3 fee charged at submission goes directly into the pockets of the writers published in ARDOR. Any remaining funds pay for our subscription to Submittable, which we feel helps make the submission process an easy one for you, the writer, and Submittable helps us keep up with the steady flow of submissions. By accepting submissions online we eliminate the cost of printing, postage and the inconvenience of a trip to the post office. Additionally this small fee helps to pay for our website and digital publishing platform. Extra pennies that remain will help fund writing competitions with respectable prize-money.
We also hope that charging this nominal fee, combined with guaranteeing payment to those selected for publication in ARDOR will increase the quality of submissions and the overall quality of our publication ... both in the short term and the long term. This, in-turn, will increase the reputation of the publication and the reputation of those who have been published in ARDOR.
WHO READS SUBMISSIONS AND MAKES EDITORIAL CHOICES AT ARDOR?
Joe Hessert, Founding Editor of ARDOR, carefully reads every submission at least twice and makes the final decisions about accepting or rejecting submissions. Joe has his MFA in Creative Writing from the Iowa Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa. For more info please visit the ABOUT page.
CAN YOU TELL ME WHY MY MANUSCRIPT WASN'T ACCEPTED BY ARDOR OR OFFER
ADVICE TO IMPROVE MY WRITING?
I regret that I cannot guarantee a personal response to every submission received by ARDOR. Occasionally a writer may receive a personal response to work that we pass on, but if you don't please don't read anything into that. It may be that your piece was one that we admired and seriously considered, but for one reason or another decided it wasn't quite right for us. Know that each and every submission we receive is carefully considered and read in full on at least two separate occasions before a decision is made.
I SUBMITTED MY SHORT STORY AND IT WAS REJECTED A FEW DAYS LATER.
WHY DIDN'T ANYONE READ MY STORY?
It was read carefully at least twice as with all of our submissions. We must have been on top of submissions that week!
HOW WILL MY WORK LOOK WHEN IT IS PUBLISHED IN ARDOR?
You can read recent issues of the publication by clicking on the ISSUES tab at the top of the page.
DO YOU NOMINATE WORK PUBLISHED IN ARDOR FOR ANTHOLOGIES OR PRIZES?
We plan to submit and nominate our writers' work for Pushcart, the Best American series and Best of the Net to name a few. It's good for us and good for you so send us your best! If we publish your work and there's a particular prize you'd like to be nominated for, email us and we'll do what we can!
CAN I INCLUDE MY STORY IN A CHAPBOOK, COLLECTION OR ANTHOLOGY IF MY WORK
APPEARED IN ARDOR?
Absolutely! Upon acceptance we acquire First North American Serial Rights and First Electronic Rights. 30 days following publication in ARDOR all rights revert to the writer and you are welcome to include the work in collections or anthologies. We ask that you credit ARDOR as the original publication and we retain the right to include your work in a "Best of ARDOR" anthology at a later date. Please let us know if work published in ARDOR goes on to win awards or is included in an anthology - we'll help promote you and it! For more information see the "RIGHTS" section at the bottom of our SUBMIT page.
IS ARDOR AN OFFICIAL ENTITY OR JUST SOMEONE'S HOBBY?
ARDOR certainly is a labor of love, but it is an official one! We were incorporated as a non-profit in the state of Maine in September of 2012 under the name ARDOR Literary Magazine and received our ISSN (2325-0836) from the Library of Congress in October of 2012, prior to the release of our first issue.
HOW DO I CONTACT THE EDITOR OF ARDOR?
You can either contact us through our website or email us directly at [email protected]. If you're inquiring about the status of your submission we'll do our best to reply as quickly as possible, but please allow two months to pass before sending a query. An exception would be to notify us about a simultaneous submission which has been accepted elsewhere. In this case you can either email us or simply withdraw your manuscript via Submittable and make a note that it was accepted elsewhere.
You're welcome to contact us via twitter and we hope that you'll consider joining our mailing list to receive announcements about upcoming issues, contests and more!
CAN I ADVERTISE IN ARDOR?
Yes! We only run content-appropriate advertisements (we will run an advertisement for a literary journal, MFA program or to advertise a writer's new book, but we won't run an advertisement for a local butcher shop or hair salon), and we offer advertisers pricing options to fit every budget. You can download our list of advertising rates HERE or you can email the editor for details.
HOW CAN I SUPPORT ARDOR?
The best way to support ARDOR is by submitting your work, reading our issues and telling your friends about the publication!
We've received a few inquiries about donations and if you'd like to make a donation to support ARDOR, you're welcome to send us a check, payable to ARDOR Literary Magazine by mail at P.O. Box 271 Gray, ME 04039. We realize that snail-mail isn't the most efficient or easiest way to donate, so we're also set up to securely process donations online via PayPal.
